Purrs and Pills

This is a true story that happened to me when I was visiting New York. I’m not the most interesting writer, so please bare with me.. haha.

A couple of years ago, I flew out to Long Island, New York to spend some time with my elderly aunt. She was getting on in years, and I hadn’t seen her in quick some time. Not that I was particularly close with her, but when given the opportunity to get away from Canada and my own problems at home, I snatched it up quickly.

The house was old, and in an old area. I liked to sit up in my isolated room sometimes with a cup of tea and a book. The weather was rainy.  It was the kind of house that too me seemed homey, yet ominous at the same time. Especially because when I had first arrived, my aunt had warned me that there had always been some funny goings-on in the house, and just to keep in my that nothing would hurt me. Obviously my curiosity was aroused, and I pressed her on the matter, but all she would say is that if she elaborated, she was certain my mind would just go and play tricks on me.

I didn’t think much of it for the first couple days. Whenever I heard a creak in the halls, or a whispering in an empty room, I chalked it up to the simple fact that the house was old. It made noises, and there must be places where wind would get in. It wasn’t until the 3rd day that anything really started happening to me that I noticed.

It was about 4 in the afternoon. My aunt had gone out to the store to do some grocery shopping. I was sitting in the living room, on tumblr of course. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw something dart across the room and out of my field of vision. I quickly looked up and saw nothing. Presuming it was just my eyes playing tricks, I went back to tumblr. Only a couple of seconds later, I saw two shapes racing back into my field of vision. I was quicker this time, and I turned. I swear that I saw two cats chasing each other. But as quick as they appeared, they were gone. I wasn’t sure if they were even there. My aunt doesn’t own any cats.

A couple hours later, my aunt came home. I considered discussing it, but then I remembered what she had originally said. Was this what she meant…? I remember how odd it felt. But I just let it go and say it was just in my mind. The evening was calm, and I forgot about anything odd until that night. I don’t usually go to bed early. I’m usually not in bed until the sun begins to rise, but I was particularly tired that night and I was asleep by 1 o’clock. I remember waking up at around 3 in the morning. I was on my side facing the window. And immediately when I woke up, I saw the silhouette of a woman standing in the light cast by the moon through the window, looking outside. I blinked and rubbed my eyes and she was gone. The door creaked. I sat up and looked around the room. The door seemed to be opening slowly. I stared at it intently and my heart was pounding. I lay back down and hid under the blankets. I wasn’t young but for some reason that made me feel more secure. Like a ghost would totally be scared of some fabric. I felt myself drifting off to sleep, but before I was out again, I felt something jump up onto the bed. Something.. walked over, and CURLED UP next to me. I know that sounds totally unrealistic but I swear to god it happened. I bolted up, and looked down, but nothing was there. Laying down again, I tried to go back to sleep. But again, as soon as I was on the edge of slumber, something jumps up onto the bed and walks over to my legs. Again, I sit up, but nothing is there. This happened a few more times and I was getting ready to scream, but suddenly I felt very faint, nauseous and tired, and I literally passed out in bed.

When morning finally came, I immediately confronted my aunt, telling her everything I had experienced that night, and during the previous afternoon. I begged her to just tell me what was going on in her house. This is what she finally told me:

About 60 years ago, before she moved into that house, there was a single woman living alone there. She was older, and had some mental issues. To put it bluntly, she was a crazy cat lady. She lived alone in the house, but accompanied with over 14 cats. She had some sort of schizophrenia as well, and apparently it was getting worse, and it was completely untreated. Family members, a couple nephews, I think, were getting ready to commit her to a mental institution, and they were going to take all of her cats to an organization that would work to get them new homes. When the woman found out, she had some sort of episode that ended in her poisoning all of her cats, and her committing suicide by overdosing on sleeping pills, in my room. She didn’t want to be separated from them, and she didn’t want to spend the rest of her life in captivity. My aunt hadn’t found out about this until years and years later, after she experienced a similar night to mine, and looked into it, after living in the home for over 10 years.

So I guess it kind of made sense in the end. Seeing the cats, seeing the woman, and the ‘fainting’ in bed. I wasn’t exactly excited to spend the next couple days there, but fortunately I barely had any other experiences the rest of the time, other than a couple unpleasant spells in which I felt effects very similar to those of over-dosing on sleeping pills.
