In 1917 something awful happened in Villisca Iowa one of the scariest places on earth. It has become one of the creepist unsolved mysteries of modern times. A family was brutally killed and the murderer was never found. It became known as the Villisca Axe Murders.
My house is at least 106 years old and there hasn’t been any deaths on or near the property, but we do live about seven houses down from a huge cemetary (our houses are relatively VERY close together). When I was little, I was lying in bed trying to sleep when I heard a pair of soft footsteps coming up the hall. Thinking it was my mother, I watched the doorway. Nothing ever passed or entered the room, they just continued far longer than they should have. Soon they were joined by another much heavier pair, and more, and more, and more until it sounded like a thunderous herd of animals. I jumped up, screaming, and shook my sister awake and she picked me up because she heard it as well and carried me into my parents room, and there it ceased. I was shaking so hard it shook my parents bed (yeah I know it sounds bad, but hey, I was six). My father decided to check it out after my mom smacked his leg, and as I’d guessed, there was nothing there.
The house was still for a few years after, but just a few months ago, I was sitting in my room after not being able to sleep around five in the morning. As i was watching TV, something slammed its fist against my door, and it couldn’t have been the wind or a breeze because my door makes a very distinct sound when it’s hit. Throwing open the door, I jumped, for nobody was out in the hallway. Checking all the bedrooms, I noticed nobody had been out of bed, both my parents’, brother’s, and sister’s rooms had closed doors, and you can hear them open or close. Always. And they were terrible fake sleepers. I decided to forget about it and went to bed, falling asleep shortly after.
About a month ago, give or take a few days, I had just woken up and had been texting my friend for about twenty minutes around 7AM. My lights were still off, my fan on, and my TV as well. I set my phone down underneath my pillow and closed my eyes, trying to get some last minute sleeping in before school, when I heared my door open. I shut my eyes and waited, listening. But my TV, fan, and lights remained off (my mom always turns them off before she wakes me up) and I felt someone sit behind my legs on the bed. I slowly opened my eyes. Nobody was in my room. I froze and waited for the thing to move, but it didn’t. Suddenly, I felt fingers on my legs, I screamed, jumped up, and ran out of my room, pounding on my mom’s bedroom door to let me in. Something similar happened to my sister, only her lamp flew across the room, hit the wall, but nothing broke, it just knocked the shade off.
I do hear voices downstairs in the hallway, like a little girl laughing at me and saying “haha you can’t find me” and that’s always scary. My dog barks at nothing, and when we were waiting for my mom to get home from work one time, we heard her clear her throat in the living room. She wasn’t home. My dog had perked up and ran into the living room and when I followed him, noticing nobody was there, I grabbed his collar and made him come out back with me.
Yes, I figured my house was haunted, for my sister always hears banging upstairs in the attic above her room, and when dad checks, nothing is there and nothing has fallen. An old woman used to sit in the rocking chair in my sister’s and my bedroom, but after we moved it, she never came back. I’ve never seen anything, thank god, but I’m not sure it won’t show itself if there is something here. My friends have left in the middle of the night because they’ve heard someone whisper in their ear and felt them tug their hair. But I don’t want to leave, and I don’t think we, or it, are.

About six months ago a friend of mine and I were backpacking through America. We’d spent the majority of our trip in and out of crappy backpacker hostels and cheap motels so when we arrived in Cushing Texas we weren’t expecting too much. It tuned out that our expectations were justified as on our arrival in the town, we found that it was comprised of only a few suburban houses and was almost deserted, save for a few dusty cars and some children playing with a ball on the main road through town. We’d seen worse on our travels however and we were pretty tired from walking all day so we settled down in the first restaurant we saw, which incidentally happened to be the only restaurant in town.
The food turned out to be generally crap so we left early to walk around and see about a place to stay. It was getting dark and after a couple of hours walking around aimlessly we got desperate and started knocking on doors asking about beds. After being turned down at more than five houses we spotted a parched field on the outskirts of a sparse looking forest. I had brought a cheap tent from the service station a week before for emergencies so we set it up quickly and collapsed into a blanket. I awoke in the middle of the night to the sound of my friend screaming like she was being murdered, she was sitting bolt upright next to me, staring into nothingness, at first I thought she was asleep but she was kept screaming at me that she couldn’t see. I grabbed her shoulders and shook her hard but she wouldn’t stop, she just kept screaming and screaming and screaming. I was relieved when someone called out from outside the tent, asking if everything was alright. I yelled back that my friend couldn’t see, and that he should call a doctor. I remember the sound of his shoes crunching through the dry grass and disappearing into the distance. Really scared by now I ripped open the tent and pulled my friend, still screaming, out into the field, wondering vaguely if fresh air would help. I remember pacing like a madman, waiting for the man to return with a doctor. I didn’t want to leave her alone. That’s when the wind changed and a distinct smell filled the air. My brother was a volunteer fire fighter in his late teens and I remember him telling me that once you smell burning flesh you never forget it. I was convinced that was what I was smelling and as I stopped to look around I swear I could see smoke drifting near the outskirts of the forest. And then, as abruptly as the screaming started, it stopped, I whipped around fearing the worst, but my friend was just sitting there, staring vaguely at her hands, a look of complete terror on her face. It remains the most frightening night of my life, but, being generally skeptical about these things, I never suspected that there was anything paranormal about the experience.
By the time the man returned with the town doctor, my friend had stopped screaming and it was chalked up to a panic attack due to exhaustion and stress that caused the temporary blindness. Feeling generally ill at ease, we left the town as soon as dawn broke. Recently my friend emailed me a link to a newspaper article, I checked the date on the article and then the health insurance claim for the doctors office and cold dread seeped through me. The article was as follows.

When I was 15, I went to Nina (a friend)’s house. In that occasion, I, Nina and R, her brother, were there. I’ve heard some stories about that house: T (another friend) told me that when she was in that house at night, she couldn’t turn the lights off, because she’d see red dots that resembled eyes following her. Also, Nina told me that the whole family used to hear people calling their names when they were alone. But I didn’t believe in ghosts, so I didn’t really care about that stories. Anyway, in that day, around 3pm, I was in the kitchen and R was in the living room; Nina was upstairs. When I was going upstairs, I saw a boy calmly following me, and thought it was R. I looked back and saw no one. R was still in the living room. Then, when I turned my head, there was a little boy right in front of me, facing me and trying to hold me. I rushed to the room where Nina was and didn’t tell her what I saw, because I couldn’t believe it was real. A few days later she told me that there was a children’s cemetery where her house was now.

This is a 100% true story. I will never forget it.
When I was around 11 and my little sister was 3 years old, she used to play with imaginary friends. If I can recall correctly, their names were Joseph, Lily and Gloria. Apparently, Gloria was the oldest and my sister would always get so upset with her because she wasn’t allowed to have fun. Gloria made the rules and if she didn’t go to bed on time or do her pre-school homework, she’d get in trouble with her. I always thought it was hilarious watching my little sister talk to her “friends” because she was adorable and watching her conversing with herself just made me laugh. My Mom didn’t find it weird and wasn’t about to send her to therapy for it because her imaginary friends seemingly had a positive influence on her. They kept her busy, she listened to Gloria when she told her to clean her room, etcetera.
After a while, we had a couple encounters of her blaming things she’d done wrong on Joseph and Lily, my Mom started to get really upset because she wouldn’t take responsibility for her actions. We let them go because she was only still a toddler. On my sister’s 4th birthday, we went to my grandparents to eat cake. It wasn’t a huge party, just a couple relatives. While my Mom and Grandma were on the back porch smoking and I was in the living room playing my gameboy, there was a crash and then my sister hysterically crying afterwards. When my Mom came in, my sister, Ragan, had smashed her cake onto the floor. My Grandma was upset and my mother was furious and took her into the spare bedroom to yell at her. I just kept hearing Ragan crying saying it wasn’t her fault and Mom had to understand this because she would never spoil her own birthday. She said Gloria made her smash it because she hasn’t had a birthday in a long time and she was jealous and if Ragan was a good friend, she wouldn’t celebrate when her friends weren’t allowed to.
It clicked in my mother’s head then. She was starting to get freaked out because this sounded like something out of a movie. None of us really believed in the paranormal, but it was starting to get weird. She asked Ragan why Gloria and her friends didn’t have birthday parties and my sister told my mother it was because they died and dead kids don’t celebrate their birthdays. Ragan wasn’t in trouble anymore and we continued with her birthday.
My mother was very into genealogy back then and I can’t recall if that has anything to do with the story, but I do know she had access to a lot of birth and death certificates and archives that other people didn’t because she paid subscriptions to websites. She called me in one day and had me look at an old newspaper article and she was shaking. And there you have it. Joseph and Lily. 10 and 6 years old, killed in a house fire while under the care of their babysitter Gloria who was 17.
I know this all sounds far fetched, but I will never forget it. Nothing like this has happened to me since and Ragan’s imaginary friends disappeared soon after and we never heard from them again. I had convinced myself for the longest time that my Mother had made it up to scare me, but I don’t even thing she has that brilliant of an imagination.

I used to think my house was haunted because the TV in the living room would suddenly turn itself on and off. I was pretty freaked out each time because I've been living here my whole life and have never experienced anything strange before. But then I remembered my TV has a presence sensor and a stand-by timer.
Remember when you posted about spiders and posted that video featuring that nightmare fuel of a spider that takes down snakes and birds? Well my subconscious remembered it. The other night I woke up, jumped out of bed and turned on the light. Why? Because in my half asleep, half awake state, my mind decided to convince itself that there was, in fact, one of these spiders on top of my covers heading for my face. Thanks for that.
So I moved into this house with some friends about a month and a half ago. It’s old, built in 1891, so there’s quite a bit of history here. I’m the kind of person who gets creeped out pretty easily (my imagination likes to wander), but never have I had actual experiences to back it up.
The first experience actually happened to my girlfriend, Alexa (fake name). She was home alone with the German Shephard dog. She was sitting at the kitchen table when she heard someone fiddling with the doorknob like they were trying to get in. The dog started barking and headed to the door like he does when someone comes home, and Alexa went with him because it sounded like one of the roomies was home and forgot their keys. But when she opened the front door no one was there. Needless to say she was pretty freaked and cuddled with the dog on the couch until someone actually came home later in the evening.
Another time I had been out at the 24-hr coffee shop doing homework because the house was pretty rowdy with a party. I got home around 5am (with a finished essay in hand!) and headed towards the bathroom through the kitchen, when I noticed something odd. The knife block was lying on its side in the middle of the floor, with the wine opener and a box of cereal placed next to it.
My first thought was that people were drunkenly playing with things and generally being weird and left the stuff on the floor. I picked it all up and put in back on the counter. Something odd that I noticed though, was the one of the knives was out of its pre-cut slot and actually stabbed into the body of the holder itself. I pulled it out and put it back in a normal slot.
I then went downstairs to my girlfriend and I’s room, where she was sleeping. She woke when I came in and we chatted a bit, when I mentioned what I had seen. She paused a moment then said, “around 3 or so I heard a loud bang in the kitchen. I thought it was Alycia (another roommate) falling over drunk or something. I listened for footsteps/people moving around, but didn’t hear anything else.” Needless to say, I was officially freaked out. I asked the other roomies about it in the morning, and most everybody could recall a loud bang in the middle of the night, but no one was up. We have no idea how those objects got to that position.
Other than that there have just been general odd noises, cold spots, electrical weirdness, and feelings of being watched. Food disappears sometimes too, when everyone is out of the house and the dog is in his room.
This house is haunted.
